Did you know we have a palm oil-free preference? At Good Cubed, we want to empower our customers to make informed decisions about the products they purchase and consume. Part of this is simply labeling everything accurately so that customers can easily find what is important to them personally. The other part is educating our customers on what the labels mean. One such label/preference we have as a filter is "Palm Oil-Free".
Why would I not want palm oil in my beauty products?
Palm oil is a commonly used product in 70% of cosmetics and beauty products. While palm oil itself is not bad for you, demand for palm oil has seen a rapid rise and correspondingly there has been a steep rise in palm oil plantations being created which are usually planted on land formerly occupied by rainforests. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production.* This much environmental degradation has a negative impact on both the indigenous flora and fauna found in these areas. Currently, a third of all mammal species in Indonesia are considered to be critically endangered as a consequence of this unsustainable development that is rapidly encroaching on their habitat.** It is not only animals and plants that are impacted but "[s]mallholders and indigenous people who have inhabited and protected the forest for generations are often brutally driven from their land. In Indonesia, more than 700 land conflicts are related to the palm oil industry."***
In short, if you are against rainforest deforestation, choosing to not buy and consume palm oil is an easy, practical step to lower demand for palm oil and slow deforestation. With this in mind, we have designed a preference, so that you can easily find products that are palm oil-free. Simply click on the preference under any product list page, and you'll find all products that are palm oil-free. Luckily, nearly all of our products are palm oil-free, but there are about a handful of them that contain palm oil. However, the palm oil used in those products was sourced from sustainable growers and/or are Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified. We are committed to working with brands who are also committed to sustainability and the preservation of our environment.
One of the most powerful ways we can influence the world is through our choices as consumers, and choosing to forgo palm oil, or consume only sustainably sourced palm oil will help slow the deforestation of the world's rainforests.
No need to toss all your products that currently contain palm oil! But it's definitely worth checking how many do and next time you buy beauty products to try and limit it as best as possible. Together, we can change the demand for it.
