Why aren’t all of your products vegan?
Although more than 60% of our products are vegan, we understand that some of our customers might be concerned as to why we decided to not be 100% vegan. Our mission is to make the change to cruelty-free products easy for everyone, and therefore we wanted to be able to accommodate a wide range of people, vegan and non-vegan, who do not want their beauty products to cause suffering to animals. The products that we carry which are not vegan are labeled as such because they either contain an ingredient derived from bee products (wax and honey) or an ingredient called Carmine, which is commonly used as a pigment, and is made from beetle shells. If you ever have a question about why a product is or is not considered vegan please contact us.
What does 100% Cruelty-Free mean?
Please see our Cruelty-Free Pledge.
What is your process for finding out if a company is cruelty-free?
Unfortunately, with a lack of regulation for labeling of products in the cosmetics industry, cruelty-free can mean a lot of different things, and it can be deceptive. A company can say they haven’t tested their products on animals, when in fact a third party has. A company can say the final product wasn’t tested on animals when the ingredients themselves were. And importantly, any company that sells their products in mainland China subjects their products to mandatory testing by the Chinese government. There is a lot of misinformation out there and this was the reason we created Good Cubed. We wanted to bring together all the various vetting processes, bring awareness to the consumer, and make the shopping experience for finding cruelty-free products easy and enjoyable.
Therefore, we only carry companies that are dedicated to being cruelty-free, not as a fad, but because they care about doing the right thing. All of our brands have signed our pledge stating their cruelty-free commitment. We have also partnered with Cruelty Cutter who has helped us vet all of our brands as they have the same strict cruelty-free requirements as we do for classifying companies as cruelty-free. (Note: Cruelty Cutter is not a certification process, it is a way of checking the cruelty-free status of brands, based on thorough research of each individual brand, performed by the people at Cruelty Cutter.)
Furthermore, many of our brands are Leaping Bunny Certified and/or PETA Certified.
The Leaping Bunny logo is the “only internationally recognized logo for determining the cruelty-free status of a company.”
The Leaping Bunny Program certifies cosmetic, personal care and/or household product companies who pledge not to conduct animal testing at any stage of product development. The company’s ingredient suppliers make the same pledge and the result is a product guaranteed to be 100% free of animal testing. All Leaping Bunny companies must be open to independent audits, and commitments to the program are renewed on an annual basis.” (Leaping Bunny) Note: Not all of the Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free brands have licensed the use of the Leaping Bunny logo. For those who have, the logo will appear on the product, but for those brands who haven’t, using our Leaping Bunny filter on the left side of the product page will bring up all Leaping Bunny Certified Cruelty-Free brands.
In order for a brand to be certified cruelty-free by PETA, company representatives must complete a short questionnaire and sign a statement of assurance verifying that they do not conduct, commission, or pay for any tests on animals for ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future.
We know that policies can change, and although we have an understanding with our brands that they will notify us if they do change their stance on animal testing, we welcome any information or concerns so that we can continue to maintain our commitment to our customers and the integrity of our brand. If you have a concern that one of our brands is no longer cruelty-free please contact us at email@example.com so we can look into their status.
What is the importance of not carrying products that are sold into mainland China?
China requires that products sold into mainland China (all of China, besides Hong Kong Territory) may be tested on animals at the government’s discretion. This means that any product sold into mainland China may be tested on animals. We do not want ourselves or our brands to be complicit in animal testing. Companies that choose to sell into mainland China are effectively saying that they are okay with their products being tested on animals so long as they are not the ones making that decision. We view choosing to put your products into a market in which a government may test them on animals is pro-animal testing and you will not find any of our brands or ourselves selling into mainland China until the laws change. If a brand begins to sell into mainland China before the laws change we will discontinue carrying their products as they will not be considered cruelty-free under our standards.
I have a product and/or brand I’d like you to carry, can I send along my recommendation?
Of course! We are always looking to expand our selection with exciting new brands! Please send us a message and we’ll be happy to look into the possibility of adding it to the beautiful mix of cruelty-free brands we carry!
